KnightSpec Specification Writing Tool

Software makes fire alarms systems easier to spec

The KnightSpec Specification Writing Tool software program allows engineers to customize fire alarm specifications for a variety of Silent Knight panels.

Writing custom fire alarm specifications just got a lot easier with a new and free software tool created by the maker of Silent Knight fire alarm panels.

The KnightSpec Specification Writing Tool is an easy-to-use software program that allows engineers to customize fire alarm specifications for a variety of Silent Knight panels.

"The program saves the engineer a lot of time," says Jim Spooner, product manager, Silent Knight by Honeywell, Maple Grove, Minn. "After entering the basic project facts, the engineer chooses the panel that will be used and the program provides the features and functions of the control panel." As users go through the menus, the program allows them to see the requirements for specific functions, such as what kind of wiring or power source a specific panel requires. It also allows the user to specify equipment choices, such as an analog detection function or the type of smoke detector and how it will be mounted. It will even tell users about the installer's responsibilities.

Users can include as many or as few of the features as needed. The program guides users on how to meet national building code or fire protection standards. Local and state building codes also can be included.

Users then can print out a report "that includes all the written statements on what you intend to do," says Spooner. "And you can submit it to the owner and fire inspector-putting all your ducks in a row so that you can proceed."

The KnightSpec Specification Writing Tool also is useful for project owners. "The owner can say specifically what he wants in the report for the bid process," Spooner says. By checking the appropriate features, the final report will include exactly what work the contractor will need to do and how and when it will submit the plans for the work.

The KnightSpec Specification Writing Tool runs on most computers. Silent Knight customers can obtain a copy from their dealer or by calling 1-800-446-6444.
