2005 Aon Build America Awards

Construction Industry's Oscar Awarded to Top AGC Projects

Known as the construction industry's "Oscars," the Aon Build America Awards symbolize excellence in construction, promoting quality, uniqueness and innovation within individual projects. Every year the Aon Build America Awards attract quality projects, big and small, from across the country. This year the judges selected 16 projects to receive an Aon Build America Award and seven projects to receive Build America Merit Awards.

Skanska USA Building Inc.
Ray & Maria Stata Center
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, Mass.

Originally conceived as a simple replacement facility and new home for computer information in intelligence sciences, the Ray & Maria Stata Center is constructed of aluminum, stainless steel, brick and concrete. It features a complex geometry and dramatic form to help promote social and intellectual interaction on its 2.8 acres with two-story neighborhoods, a serene outdoor terrace and an expansive interior boulevard.

Clark Construction Group LLC
U.S. Army Modularity Campus
Fort Stewart, Ga.

The $73-million design-build contract had only .5% scope changes. Despite adverse weather and project shutdowns due to three hurricanes, the project completed all critical milestones on their original dates. The team cleared 120 acres in just eight days and completed and approved all building designs in two weeks. The 400,000-sq-ft building and 120-acre site development was completed in 142 days. This AGC member furnished an important "new army" training campus to house a combat ready unit that will improve on the Army's already rapid deployment.

Clark Construction Group LLC
National Museum of the American Indian
Washington, D.C.

The museum's unique design presented many challenges that were overcome by the Clark team. These included building a structure that is almost entirely curved with an unsupported overhang weighing 750 tons, carefully installing the steel dome, and laying high steel beams and slabs of concrete around underground supports and electric and water lines.

With one of the most complicated aspects of the project being the framework, Clark self-performed 100% of the concrete work during the 38-month contract. No two floors utilize the same geometric layout, and the design contains many compound curves and changing radii throughout the building.

SpawGlass Construction Corp.
Terminal D Remodel and Upgrades
George Bush Intercontinental Airport
Houston, Texas

Major structural, mechanical and electrical modifications were required to build two pedestrian bridges across the lobby and five feet outside the existing international Terminal D at the airport, along with a new sterile corridor and ramp, modifications of the in-transit lounge and three new INS interview rooms.

The project was constructed during the night hours while keeping the terminal operational at all times. Differentiating itself from other projects, the work area had to be spotless by 7 a.m. every day and appear as though no one had been working there the night before. With extremely limited construction space, the team had to develop creative solutions for steel erection, material delivery and other project issues.

C. E. Floyd Company Inc.
Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel
Concord, Mass.

As the heart of the Concord Academy campus, the Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel underwent a 1,100-sq-ft addition to an existing timber frame meeting house. Renovation of the existing space included major structural improvements to meet current codes. Retaining its 19th Century look and feel, the work maintained goals set by the chapel advisory committee to retain the chapel's intimacy and simplicity. Their challenge was to place the Corinthians carving as a main focal point, ensure that the acoustics remained "warm and beautiful" and preserve the atmosphere of creaky wooden pews and benches.

Massman Construction Co.
Olmsted Dam Approach Walls
Olmsted, Ill.

The Olmsted Dam Approach Walls required the construction of large drilled shaft foundations in the Ohio River to support massive steel and precast concrete floating walls for the new lock structure. The pontoons were constructed offsite in a graving yard developed specifically for this project. The large steel and precast concrete elements were handled and installed by the largest floating crane in use on the inland waterways.

ASI RCC Inc./R.E. Monks Construction Co.
Standley Lake Dam Improvement Project
Westminster, Colo.

Major upgrades were constructed in and around this four million cu yd embankment dam while the reservoir was at or near capacity, to improve structural integrity, operational efficiency and public safety while reducing environmental risk. The joint venture construction team delivered the project safely, utilizing project safety teams, comprehensive task planning and professional cooperation during the complex and concurrent construction activity.

Tompkins Builders/Grunley-Walsh (GC)
Gilbane Building Co. (CM)
National World War II Memorial
Washington, D.C.

The National World War II Memorial is an award-winning project that has incorporated innovative construction, unique design, prominent location and historical significance. Innovative construction techniques maximized the use of value engineering, reducing cost while enhancing the quality of construction.

C. J. Mahan Construction Co. LLC
Lane Avenue Bridge over the Olentangy River
Columbus, Ohio

Located at the gateway to the main campus of the Ohio State University, the Lane Avenue Bridge is critically important to the university. The project replaced the old earth-filled concrete bridge built in 1919 with a new two-span cable-stay bridge that is 370 ft long and 112 ft wide with six lanes of vehicular traffic and two 12-ft wide sidewalks. Opened to pedestrian traffic on November 14, 2003, in time for the last home game of the 2003 Ohio State University football season, the project was completed for less than the original cost projection.

Boh Brothers Construction Co. LLC
St. George Island Bridge Replacement
Apalachicola, Fla.

Located in one of the most productive oyster beds in the U.S., the environmentally friendly replacement of the St. George Island bridge featured 133 spans of 125 ft, making up the low-level structure over shallow water and a high-level bridge over the 4,933-ft-long ship impact zone. The 54-ft-diameter concrete piles with 8-ft-thick walls and a 3-ft concrete cover provide a 100-year design life.

Healy Tibbitts Builders Inc.
Sewer Outfall Extension at Fort Kamehameha
Hickam Air Force Base
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

Deep water open ocean outfall pipeline projects are not ordinary, everyday occurrences. Exposed to open ocean conditions, the project included the installation of approximately 12,800 ft of a sewer ocean outfall pipeline from the Fort Kamehameha sewage treatment plant to a water depth of 150 ft located offshore of the reef runway at Honolulu International Airport.

Messer Construction Co.
The Ohio Judicial Center
Columbus, Ohio

The court's move to its own dedicated building from a shared space with other branches of government elevates and recognizes the importance of the judiciary and its independence. Finishing under budget and ahead of schedule, this project included renovation and historical restoration of the Ohio department building, built in 1932. The Ohio Judicial Center now houses the Supreme Court of Ohio, its law library, and other state of Ohio courts and commissions. The building has 19 levels, 16 above grade.

Megen Construction Co./Dugan & Meyers Construction Co.
National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
Cincinnati, Ohio

This national landmark building houses an inspirational organization dedicated to the pursuit of freedom. Overlooking the Ohio River, the center is located on top of a municipal parking garage and public transit center, which had to be built first. It is also less than a block away from the Cincinatti Reds' Great American Ballpark, also under construction, which impacted the schedule and required tremendous cooperation with multiple private and public entities.

Caddell Construction Co. Inc.
D/B Conversion to Hypersonic/Aerodynamic
& Propulsion Test Unit
Arnold AFB, Tenn.

This 30-year-old aircraft testing facility underwent major upgrade and conversions that enabled ground testing of hypersonic speeds (6,000-plus mph) with simulations inside the one-of-a-kind test chamber to 4,200°F and pressures over 3,000 psi. Caddell used some of the most sophisticated mechanical, electrical and instrumentation systems for any project recently built in the U.S.

Bowen Engineering Corp.
Indiana Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade & Expansion
City of Lafayette, Lafayette, Ind.

Bowen was committed to completing the project above the expectations of the owner. Increasing the facility's capacity from 22 mgd to 55 mgd while maintaining the current treatment of 22 mgd at all times, the project work included an entirely new headworks, primary clarifiers, aeration tanks, final clarifiers, effluent pumping station, chlorine building, sludge thickening building, sludge control building and more.

Gundlach Champion Inc.
St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish Rebuild
Iron Mountain, Mich.

Nearly destroyed by a fire on January 5, 2003, the St. Mary and Joseph Parish chose Gundlach Champion to secure and reconstruct the 70-year-old church as well as provide cost estimating and budgeting for the project. Gundlach helped the client and the community through monetary contributions, volunteering, active participation of local subcontractors, scholarships, media availability and a company-wide knowledge that the team was working for their neighbors and friends in its community.
