Projects Symbolize America's Construction
Excellence
AGC member
firms were honored in Las Vegas for outstanding projects,
safety and partnering
By AGC CEO Steve Sandherr
A collective burst of energy and accomplishment
could be felt throughout the construction industry after the
completion of AGC's 86th Annual Convention in mid-March in
Las Vegas, Nevada. Construction professionals from around
the United States joined together in Las Vegas for a week
featuring the latest construction news from industry experts,
discussions on highway reauthorization, materials pricing,
environmental trends and safety innovations.
The convention was successful in its purpose to educate AGC
members about legislation affecting the construction industry,
best practices for improving safety performance, news on AGC's
efforts to examine alternatives to government mandates for
diesel retrofit and the industry's latest technology advances.
Workshops and presentations armed attendees with the information
and tools necessary to increase workplace efficiency and to
continue growing more successful businesses.
Our awards programs-AGC/Willis Construction Safety Excellence
Awards, Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards and
Aon Build America Awards-recognize the industry's best of
the best in safety, partnering and construction projects across
divisions.
The scope and quality of the winning projects were impressive
and included companies and contractors who have shown a dedication
to safety by successfully integrating it into their businesses.
The awards featured construction projects that epitomize
the principles of partnering, and the construction projects,
big and small, from across the country that symbolize excellence
in construction, strive to promote quality, uniqueness and
innovation within individual projects.

This year, we had a record number of outstanding entries
for these three awards programs. The winning projects were
not only examples of excellent project management and creativity
but also symbolize the important work of restoring and maintaining
the infrastructure and heart of America.
Projects spanned from the building of a national monument,
upgrading and conversions to a hypersonic/aerodynamic and
propulsion test unit, restoration of a 19th Century chapel,
an environmentally friendly rebuilding of a bridge above one
of the most productive oyster beds in the U.S., to a wastewater
treatment plant upgrade and expansion.
In looking back on these outstanding awards prog-rams featured
at the annual convention and looking ahead to the next, I
couldn't help but wonder who has not submitted projects in
the past year, who has not touted their newest safety training
program, and who has not shared their best partnership success
story or an example of their best project?
Now is the time to start thinking about submitting entries
for next year's Build America, Partnering and Safety Awards
programs-we could see you featured in the June 2006 issue
of Constructor.
