Chapter Awards Announced At Annual Convention

AGC of Alabama's Chapter of the Year Award. (L-R Henry Hagood,Jr., Billy Smith, Jim Waltze, Eddie Stewart and Bill Caton)

AGC is made up of a nationwide network of 98 chapters that provide services to member firms at the local level while furthering national goals. Chapter of the Year and Chapter Public Relations awards were given to this year's outstanding chapters at AGC's 86th Annual Convention in Las Vegas, March 14-18.

Small and Large Chapter of the Year awards are given in recognition of excellence in chapter management, membership recruitment and member services. In conjunction with the Chapter of the Year Awards, AGC also gives the James E. Cashman Trophy to the chapter with the most effective membership program and the J. Howard Mock Award to the chapter with the greatest increase in net membership growth.

This year, three AGC chapters were recognized for their invaluable service to their members and to the national organization.

Alabama AGC was recognized twice, receiving both the Large Chapter of the Year Award (a chapter operating with a budget of more than $750,000) and the James E. Cashman Trophy. Last year was a banner year for Alabama AGC, completing a 40,000-sq-ft state headquarters building while documenting its efforts to avoid problems with mold.

This led the chapter to develop a guide, "Mold Prevention: A Case Study," which has received national attention. During the past year, Alabama AGC achieved a significant increase in membership growth, with 1,069 members.

Alabama AGC increased political action committee support, growing its PAC to the fifth largest in the state and giving them stronger political influence with Alabama lawmakers. Alabama AGC was also one of the first chapters to host steel erection training through the Susan Harwood grant at national AGC.

The Small Chapter of the Year (a chapter operating with a budget of less than $750,000) was awarded to AGC of South Dakota, Highway & Heavy Utilities Chapter. The chapter was highly active in the South Dakota political process-testifying before several state legislative committees and increasing support for the Contractors Political Action Committee of South Dakota (CONPAC). In 2004, AGC of South Dakota launched a new comprehensive public relations prog-ram to improve the image of the construction industry in South Dakota.

Fox Valley Associated General Contractors received the J. Howard Mock Award for being the chapter with the greatest increase in net membership growth, combining all three categories of membership-regular, specialty contractor and supplier/service provider.

The Chapter PR Awards honored five chapters for successful outreach campaigns. Winning projects included those with extensive media exposure, covering efforts made to improve the industry's image through various service projects, educational endeavors and training for young constructors and students.
