Chapter Corner: Chapters Honored for Outstanding Local Services

Chapter of the Year Awards presented at 2007 Annual Convention

Each day, AGC’s 96 chapters provide members with solutions and resources that improve their businesses and create a better local and national construction industry. AGC recognized this dedication with the 2007 Chapter of the Year Awards at AGC’s 88th Annual Convention in San Antonio in March.

This year’s winners—AGC of St. Louis, AGC of Alaska, AGC of Utah and AGC of Greater Florida—are impressive examples of how chapters provide the best local services in the industry.

AGC of St. Louis was awarded the Large Chapter of the Year Award, given to chapters with an annual budget over $750,000. In 2006, the St. Louis Chapter implemented a strategic plan that focused on streamlining and updating its organizational structure,  bylaws and services for contracting; providing fewer meetings with greater benefits; becoming more active legislatively and continuing to support construction education.

Large Chapter of the Year: AGC of St. Louis: (L-R) Chapter President Len Toenjes, 2006 AGC President Harry Mashburn and Chairman of the Board Paul Shaughnessy.

This focus resulted in a highly successful year in which the chapter doubled its Political Action Committee contributions to more than $88,000. A legislative position document was distributed to members and local legislators that served to educate members on the importance of their participation in governmental affairs, resulting in a 100% increase in Legislative Action Center use.

These efforts, combined with a post-legislative report, educated local legislators about the impact of their votes on the construction industry and improved the legislative perception of the chapter.

The chapter continued to support construction education through its sponsorship of the Construction Careers Center Charter High School. The school has 350 students and offers students from low-income families opportunities to gain job skills and receive a quality education.

Small Chapter of the Year: AGC of Alaska (L-R) 2006 Chapter President Robby Capps, Harry Mashburn, Chapter Executive Director Dick Cattanach and 2007 Chapter President Glen Knickerbocker.

The chapter’s work with the school also resulted in Construction Users Roundtable Workforce Development and AGC of America Diversity Awards.

AGC of Alaska, the winner of the Small Chapter of the Year Award, given to chapters with an annual budget of less than $750,000, is seen as a leader in the community and throughout the state because of the working relationships it has with all areas of the state government and the legislature and because of the quality services it supplies to members.

Just a few of the highlights include securing funding from the legislature by working with the Department of Labor and other Alaskan entities to create the Anchorage Construction Academy. This program provides vocational training previously eliminated in secondary schools and the knowledge to enter the construction trades.

The chapter also successfully created and managed the Alaska Construction Industry Substance Abuse Program to provide an industry-wide awareness of the benefits of a drug-free and safe workplace.

AGC of Alaska also planned and implemented an award-winning public-relations campaign to improve the image of the construction industry and encourage more young Alaskans to consider a career in construction.

AGC of Utah received the J. Howard Mock Award, given to the chapter with the best net growth in membership since last year. AGC of Greater Florida received the James E. Cashman Trophy, which recognizes the chapter with the most effective membership program. The chapter increased its membership by 50% using effective communications, public relations and basic leadership principles.
