Inside AGC New CEU Program Offers Something for Everyone AGC’s approval as IACET-authorized provider benefits professionals at all career levels Last December, AGC received approval from the International Association for Continuing Education & Training to become an authorized provider of continuing education units for its professional development and training programs. While nearly anyone can offer a traditional CEU, the IACET CEU adheres to strict standards and is widely recognized as evidence of a quality educational experience. Since gaining approval, AGC has offered CEUs at the Leadership in Construction Workshop in Tempe, Ariz., in late January, as well as the executive and risk management track sessions at AGC’s 89th Convention in Las Vegas. IACET CEUs can be used to maintain a professional affiliation or achieve advancement with more than 400 universities, regulatory boards, state entities and other organizations worldwide. By offering CEUs at programs throughout the year, AGC has created a simple avenue for members to earn or maintain designations from such organizations as the Certified Safety Professional Board, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Institute of Architects and Society for Human Resource Management. AGC is working to take education to the next level and is proud to offer CEUs to its members. The ability to earn CEUs while attending AGC’s Convention and other programs makes member participation twice as effective. Not only is there an opportunity to learn valuable business information, but now it’s also possible to work toward certification in a specific field. The beauty of CEUs is that they can be applied to countless certifications and career levels. No matter what designation participants are working to attain in the construction profession, those CEUs can be earned with AGC.
“I have to earn CEUs every year to maintain my license as a registered architect,” said Kurt Wadlington, senior project engineer at Sundt Construction, Inc., Tucson, Ariz. “It’s great to be able to earn those CEUs while attending a workshop that has value to my business and career as well.” Recently, IACET joined forces with the American National Standards Institute to develop ANSI/IACET standards. According to IACET, those standards will now apply across all disciplines and ensure valuable learning outcomes. ANSI’s support of IACET further solidifies the value of the program, and AGC members have begun to take advantage of this opportunity. At both the Leadership in Construction Workshop and AGC’s 89th Annual Convention, every 10 hours of class time resulted in one IACET CEU. Courses such as “Good to Gone! Why Contractors Fail,” included one-and-a-half hours of class time and .15 IACET CEUs. By participating in the program and completing an evaluation and post-program assessment, attendees were able to earn IACET CEUs toward their preferred designation. In addition to education requirements to maintain professional designations, an increasing number of states are requiring continuing education for renewal of state contractor licenses. Some of these states include Florida, Alaska, Georgia, Utah and Virginia. These requirements range from six to 18 hours. AGC programs offering IACET CEUs would meet a number of these requirements. Education and training are the keys to a skilled work force and a bright future for the construction profession. Now, AGC is a resource for continuing education that can help its members meet their professional development and training requirements.
