2008 Marvin M. Black Partnering Awards

Awards program celebrates innovative projects where partnering was one of the keys to success

The 2008 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards, sponsored by Liberty Mutual Surety, recognize the construction companies that best exemplify the spirit of partnering. In its second decade, the Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards celebrates successful partnerships and years of outstanding results from partnering collaborations.

SUNDT CONSTRUCTION INC.
Ironwood-Gantzel Roadway Improvement Project Pinal County, Ariz.

The $59.7-million Ironwood-Gantzel roadway improvement project comprises 13 miles of heavily traveled arterial roadway. The purpose was to improve capacity, public safety and the operational characteristics of the roadway. Located in one of the fastest-growing counties in America, 30,000 commuters used the existing two-lane road daily as their primary route to work in Phoenix.

Sundt created three partnering goals: treat team members with respect; achieve outstanding communication and ensure effective coordination and stakeholder input. The ultimate satisfaction the team received was the high level of praise throughout the project from local residents, the traveling public and project stakeholders.

MCCARTHY BUILDING COS. INC.

St. Joseph Hospital Patient Care Center

Teamwork was the key ingredient to success, and McCarthy achieved all seven of its initial partnership goals. The St. Joseph Hospital Patient Care Center offered numerous challenges, all met through a fully integrated partnering approach. The project team completed a new center on-time, within budget and without any claims. The team’s success is highlighted by a zero recordable safety incident rate.

BALFOUR BEATTY INFRASTRUCTURE INC.
Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, Seattle, Wash.

The Balfour Beatty team worked on the downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel—a $90-million project in the heart of downtown Seattle—and forged highly respectful and effective working relationships among all team members. These relationships, along with a commitment to partnering, helped the team overcome challenges such as the highly traveled, congested, urban environment of residential and commercial use.

The team had to maintain vehicular and pedestrian access through the project site, and to all adjacent businesses and residences throughout the construction period. The Balfour Beatty team monitored stakeholder goals through periodic partnering sessions, and by regularly reassessing and reevaluating goals. This process helped identify potential roadblocks and focus on the major milestones.

COSTELLO INDUSTRIES, SOUTHEAST
Orlando International Airport Airside 2 and Airside 4 Ramp, Orlando, Fla.

Orlando International Airport is the largest airport in the state, the gateway to the heart of Florida and the 13th largest airport in the U.S. The 60 airside 2 and 4 gates, where the project was located, handle half of the nearly 36 million passengers that pass through the airport annually. These gates had to remain fully functional and operational throughout the project. The team created and maintained a true cooperative spirit of partnering: goal setting, achievement, safety, collaboration, trust and open communication. Costello received the GOAA Disadvantaged Business Enterprise “advocate of the year” award for contracting with more than 30% minority or disadvantaged businesses on this project. Costello completed the project ahead of schedule and on budget.

SKANSKA USA CIVIL WEST CALIFORNIA DISTRICT INC.
Interstate 40 Westbound Emergency Bridge Replacement Essex, Calif.

Skanska used the partnering process to meet the difficult challenge of a fast-track emergency project that required replacement of six damaged bridges on a heavily traveled 17-mile portion of interstate located in the Mojave Desert. Among the obstacles overcome during this project were environmental concerns, the remote location, desert climates, long working hours, a fast-paced schedule and never-before-attempted construction processes. In order to complete the I-40 westbound bridge replacement project under budget, early and to the utmost satisfaction of everyone involved, there was a genuine commitment to partnering at all levels.
